The freely floating and warm tone of the flute attracts many people. It allows an intuitive way of expression, which is rather similar to singing.
Playing the flute can have a very healing effect in the case of asthma or chronicle bronchitis, because the player has to constantly take deep breaths, which in turn strengthens the lungs. I speak here from my own experience and also from that of some of my pupils.
I offer flute lessons for children from the age of about ten years onwards. Some experience in recorder playing is a considerable advantage but not a necessary condition. For beginners usually weekly lessons of 30min.are recommendable. Depending on his or her ability to concentrate and on the stamina of a pupil the lessons can be extended and for adults I would always recommend 60min.lessons per week.
I don’t teach group lessons, because in a one to one set up I can better adapt to the wishes and needs of a pupil and also react to individual creative ideas, which especially children often come up with.
Right from the very first lesson I accompany my pupils either with the flute or on the piano. Thus I can guide them towards finding a good tone through hearing me play as well as help them to recognize the harmonic context of a melody. Through the ensemble playing they also develop a better rhythmical awareness.
I encourage my pupils to sing the melodies they have learned to play, in order to help them to better recognize the musical phrasing and to give them some aural training. Any inhibitions that might arise when asked to sing are usually easily overcome.
If you don’t yet have an instrument, you can hire one from me for a small monthly fee to try it out. I am also happy to offer advice regarding the purchase of an instrument.
